Welcome Back Jeff Halpern

Earlier today the Canadiens claimed 36 year old Jeff Halpern off waivers from the New York Rangers. He will be paid 700k and is a UFA at the end of the year. Habs fans will remember Halpern from the 2010-2011 campaign when he put up 11 goals and 15 assists in 72 games for the Habs. Halpern only has 1 assist in 30 games for the Rangers this year but he is not being brought in for his offensive production. He has won 56.7% of his face-offs and can help the Canadiens there. He is also a defensive specialist and will help out on the penalty kill. I like this pickup. Can this be setting the Canadiens up to be making a trade soon? Time will tell. Help welcome Halpern to the Habs by following him on twitter @jeff_halpern.
