Top 5 Questions Going into the 2014-2015 Season

Going into the 2014-2015 season, there lies many questions that will be answered in some time, but human beings are impatient species…so let’s start getting on edge now…

5. Will there be a prominent and permanent emergence of young players?

Both Tinordi and Beaulieu have been in and out of the lineup as many times as Leaf fans were disappointed last season…(that means many times, Smart Alec!) Neither have had the concrete opportunity to solidify a spot on the Canadiens’ lineup. Chances are that one will crack the lineup permanently, although it will be difficult, as there are already five NHL-calibre defensemen on the team in Subban, Markov, Emelin, Weaver and Gilbert. This will leave one opening for either Tinordi, Beaulieu, or a new face, such as Pateryn or Nygren.

4. Can Alex Galchenyuk take another leap forward in his development?

Galchenyuk was drafted with the promise he’ll one day be a top 10 player in the league. Two seasons in, and that promise has become more and more theoretically visible. Galchenyuk is a natural centre, although he’s been playing Left Wing under coach Michel Therrien. The logjam at centre in the lineup creates very little room for the “Russian-who’s-actually-American-or-vice-versa” to move to his natural position. Could Galchenyuk’s third season be the season he pushes one of Plekanec, Eller or Desharnais out of a centre role? If not this season, will it be too late? Can it hurt his development in becoming one of the top players in the league?

3. Will P.K. Subban’s new contract hurt his performance?

Fresh off a spanking-new $72 million contract, will we see a different Pernell Karl? Past two seasons, Subban has had to earn his upcoming contract…and he did, however now that he’s earned it, does he have more to prove? Is there more in the tank? Can he get better and does he want to get better? Some may say that the Ontario native’s talent will simply get better until a peak age, but one could argue that massive contracts hurt players’ talent. A combination of pressure and (possibly) having no more motivation could potentially be a large factor in a declined performance.

2. Can anyone guess who will be the newest Montreal Canadiens’ captain?

You don’t know…and if it makes you feel better, I don’t even know. The range of options range from Subban, to Markov, to Galchenyuk, to Gallagher, to Plekanec, to Prust to Weise. Yes, I have heard cases for each of those players…and I think it’s only a matter of time before Head Coach Therrien makes the executive decision to draw straws. That is my guess…

1. Will Milan Lucic “F*cking kill” Dale Weise?

Lucic wants to kill Dale Weise…Not just kill Dale Weise, but “f*cking kill” Dale Weise. This is concerning. This is very concerning. I took the initiative in contacting the head of National Hockey League Player Safety to inquire if the use of riot shields and hammerhead shark wranglers would be allowed in this upcoming season…I have yet to hear back from them…

Montreal Canadiens: Worst 10 Trades Since 1993

Last week I counted down the 10 best trades the organization had made since last winning the Stanley Cup in 1993. It’s only fitting that I should examine the other side of the coin and list off what I see as the 10 worst trades in the same time span. Maybe a disclaimer should be […]
