Artturi Lehkonen led the way this past week, contributing a hat trick and an assist in Frolunda’s playoff run. Michael McCarron was a close second, providing three points in two games. Sven Andrighetto and Charles Hudon both had solid weeks, while Mike Condon regained form. Daniel Audette posted solid totals and Brett Lernout scored his first WHL playoff goal. However, Zach Fucale was the back up for both of Quebec’s playoff games, and Josiah Didier and Colin Sullivan saw their seasons come to an end.

Notable Performances:

Artturi Lehkonen – LW – Frolunda HC
Drafted 55th overall, 2nd round, 2013

It has been a season marred by inconsistency for Artturi Lehkonen–a 19-year-old SHL player. This past week, he contributed a key assist in Frolunda’s game seven win over Luleå HF. In game one versus Växjö Lakers HC, Lehkonen opened the scoring by sneaking behind the defence and tapping in the puck. Late in the third period, he would score once again, this time by picking up a loose puck at the goal line, spinning to his forehand, and burying the puck into the open cage. Lehkonen was rewarded with a crucial shift with seconds remaining in the game, where he completed his second SHL hat trick by burying the empty-netter.

A bout with mono, disappointing performance at the WJC, and a goalscoring drought measured by months have all tainted this season for Lehkonen. However, since the beginning of February, Lehkonen’s play has picked up. His ice time has increased, as have his shots/game, and his point totals have subsequently improved. Lehkonen provides a strong two-way game mature beyond his years that always makes him valuable as a player; however, sometimes he just doesn’t show enough on the offensive side. Lately, that hasn’t been a problem, and hopefully he keeps it up.

Michael McCarron – C/RW – Oshawa Generals
Drafted 25th overall, 1st round, 2013

Last season, McCarron took his game to a new level in the postseason. For the second straight year, he has done that once again (although it’s early on). In game one versus Peterborough, McCarron set up Tobias Lindberg for an easy goal after a dominant effort along the boards. Late in the first, McCarron missed an open-ice check and crashed into the goaltender, forcing him to drop the gloves. McCarron made quick work of his challenger, and once he returned to the ice he continued to impress. Following a great effort by Michael Dal Colle, McCarron picked up the puck and fired an off-balance, yet heavy shot, picking the top corner and ending a 14-game goalscoring drought. In game two, McCarron got off to a slow start, but took the third period over, culminating with the eventual game-winner–a wicked shot in the high slot.

Statistically, it has been a tale of two seasons for McCarron, play-wise, it has a tale of one–excellent play. McCarron is the one of the OHL’s top defensive forwards and arguably the league’s top powerforward. However, in Oshawa he just hasn’t managed to produce at the insane rate that he was London. In the weeks leading up to the playoffs, McCarron was continually creating chances, but simply wasn’t able to find twine. Thankfully, Oshawa’s depth scoring helped make up for the lack of McCarron’s finish. If this season is anything to go by, McCarron possesses a highly inconsistent level of finish. But once he gets on a roll, he’s hard to stop, and hopefully, this gets the ball rolling.
