The Canadiens have signed prospect Martin Reway to a three-year entry-level contract. Following the deal to Artturi Lehkonen, it was only a matter of time before Reway put pen to paper with the Habs as well. Montreal had until June 1st, 2017 to get him under contract and elected to get it done sooner rather than later.

Reway was drafted by the Canadiens in the 4th round (116th overall) in 2013. He then participated in the team’s development camp that July. Once his 2013-14 season finished with the Gatineau Olympiques of the QMJHL, where he tallied 62 points in 43 games and added 15 points in 9 playoff contests, Reway made the decision to continue his career overseas.

With Sparta Praha, Reway had 9 goals and 28 assists in 34 games, good for third on his team in scoring during the 2014-15 campaign. This total also rewarded him with Czech Extraliga Most Points by Junior award and Czech Extraliga Rookie of the Year. This past season, the Slovakian forward split time between Sparta Praha and Fribourg-Gottéron. While Reway was in Switzerland, he put up 21 points in 19 games.

Furthermore, Reway has worn his country’s colours on many occasions. He has participated in three World Junior Championships, claiming a bronze medal in 2015 and was named as one of the top 3 players on the team for the tournament. He has also played in two World Championships, most recently being this year.

GM Marc Bergevin had this to say on the signing of Reway:

We are very pleased to have reached an agreement with Martin Reway. A young forward with tremendous offensive skills, Martin has the potential to become a very good player. He enjoyed success during his two seasons in North America with the QMJHL’s Gatineau Olympiques before turning professional in Europe and playing in the Czech Republic and Switzerland the past two years. Our scouting personnel had the opportunity to see him play several times, including at the international level during the World Juniors and the World Hockey Championships, and we are glad to have him join a group of young prospects who will be competing for a spot with our team at training camp in September.

This is an excellent signing by the Canadiens as it is important to give an opportunity to the young players to grow in your organization but also potentially make the big club. Reway has the skill and speed to have success in the NHL, it’s now time to show everyone.

*Note: Reway plans to play in North America next season, whether it is with the Habs or down in the AHL with the IceCaps.

Carey Price Deserves Better Than the Montreal Canadiens

It is needless to say that Carey Price is on a team that simply does not capitalize on his abilities. The Habs are on the verge of missing the playoffs for the third straight year. And while the injuries and bad calls are valid excuses for their current losing streak, there are plenty of errors […]
