“It’s The Same Fucking Thing” …From Max Pacioretty

The following contents are an open letter to the “captain” of the Montreal Canadiens.

ATTN: Max Pacioretty,

Your fire and passion in that interview was the first real glimmer of a captain we have seen from you all season.  It is admirable that you want to take ownership for the recent misfortunes that this team has faced, grossly outplaying the opposition but not getting rewarded for it.  That is the correct mentality.  It is a leader’s mentality.  You have that much correct.

The real question you must ask yourself is: “what have I done to make it better?”

You have… what… two shots on goal in the last two games? Three? Maybe? You have had field multipliers worth more in a single period before.  The Canadiens are outshooting their opponents on a regular basis.  Why are yours not a significant portion of that total? This question is not entirely rhetorical.  How about you go to the front of the net? You did it against Vancouver and managed to pot one en route to coming back from being down 3-0 to win it 4-3.  You know… that whole “character” thing or buzzword or whatever you so wish to refer to it as.

It is becoming painfully evident that you, Max Pacioretty, were the safe or acceptable choice for captain as opposed to the true and inspired choice for captain.  More bullshit notions from hockey culture anonymous.  When Brendan Gallagher went down, the REAL leader of the offensive unit of this team left us.  This obviously cannot be denied since you insist on playing a soft game on the perimeter and defence that is, we will say, lacking in pressure.  You would rather just watch the likes of Shea Weber have time and daylight to his liking before firing off arguably the deadliest shot in the game, just like you and your buddy Davey were too busy watching Roman Josi like “So THAT’S what the other team tries to stop P.K. –the REAL captain– from doing…”

This is all just a microcosm.  You only started to show up in the playoffs for the first time in the late stages of any given round.  Yes, you have the series clinchers against Tampa Bay AND Boston from 2014 but your goal against Ottawa this year was an empty netter with the game already in hand.  Before, between and since then, you have been without regard or reason to even be on the ice.  Your line was the one that gave away the game against the Predators and it is far from the first time that you being, yes, unfairly saddled with Desharnais and Weise was the only one outplayed.

Max, you are crumbling under pressure.  P.K. Subban thrives on it, lives for it.  Brendan Gallagher stands up in the face of everyone and everything and you have 6 inches and who knows how much weight over him.  What in the world is your excuse? Don’t answer that.  Read the literal writing on the wall in your locker room.

It comes down to this: STEP THE FUCK UP.

It HAS been “the same fucking thing” but not just for the last ten games.  It has been the same fucking thing since you stopped going to the front of the net.  You went there in 2013-14.  You scored a career high 39 goals.  Do you want the elusive 40th in a season? Better yet, do you want to win a Stanley Cup? Be willing to pay the price.  Guy Lafleur, a real leader and playoff performing point pegging winger, literally told you how to win the Stanley Cup.  Showcase some willingness to pay the price.  Stop being a left handed, left side Phil Kessel.  Once upon a time, it was an undisputed fact that you had the best contract in the entire league.  Right now, you are barely worth the paper it was printed on and about as much as that combined with the ink used to write it.

Yes, you had a point tonight and everyone has to start somewhere but it was merely a half karat diamond discovered in a steaming pile of mess in what was otherwise a dumpster.

Be a leader, Max.  Show some character.  Make no mistake: no one would bother to tell you this if they did not believe that you were capable of doing it.

That includes yours truly, Max.  I, like many others, believe that you are capable.  You are that could-have-been-honor-roll-student making terrible decisions and mediocre life moves; you are the guy with a degree but working in a dive.

Your deepest fear, Max, may be that you are powerful beyond measure.

  1. You think he’ll read it?
Or, worse, if he does, you think he’ll apply it.
It would be just too good…

    Cheers!

  2. The words should resonate…but it’s a team sport…everyone should be looking in the mirror….each one needs to step up and play every shift…stop giving easy goals and finish, find a good position whether with or without the puck to get an upper hand…and when the opportunity should present itself…shoot (hit the net) and do it quick…nothing is more stoppable than a predictable calculated effort!!! Need to be creative!!

  5. Way too harsh & way too soon to be this hard on the young 1st time Captain, who has actually looked better the last couple games. This kind of treatment from a “fan?” is exactly what makes Montreal such a difficult market to play in and can potentially harm a stand-up player’s future.
This is not just a criticism, it’s an attack on a single player, which is extremely unfair. Plekanc wears an “A” and as much as I love him…what has he done lately? PK has one goal… Emelin needs to be traded, Semin needs to be replaced….the list goes on.
I’m surprised you aren’t attacking Price & Gallagher for being injured.
I hope Max does read your malicious & personal attack, & I hope you run into him in a dark alley.
Critics are always the biggest bullies & usually the biggest pussies!
