IceCaps – Senators: A Numbers Game (Dec. 5, 2015)

Here are some comments and observations from the St. John’s IceCaps vs Binghamton Senators game Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton N.Y.

1  A quick look at tonight’s line combos and D pairings along with injuries and scratches:

2  The IceCaps power play went 0 for 3 tonight bringing their season total to 15 for 81 for a 18.5% success rate. The power play entered the game in 10th place scoring 15 goals on 78 attempts for a 19.2% success rate along with giving up 1 shorthanded goal. On the road the power play entered the game in 11th place scoring just 9 times on 47 attempts for a 19.1% success rate.

3  St. John’s penalty kill went 2 for 2 tonight to bring their season total to 86 for 101 for a 85.1% success rate. The penalty kill entered the game in 11th place giving just 15 goals on 99 attempts for a 84.8% success rate while scoring 1 shorthanded goal. On the road the penalty kill entered the game in 6th place giving up 8 goals on 58 attempts for a success rate of 86.2%.

4  The IceCaps were outshot 30-28 by the Senators. Dietz and Holloway led the Icecaps with 3 shots while Penny led the Senators and all players with 4 shots. (1st period IceCaps 13-9, 2nd period 6-5 Senators, 3rd period 15-10 Senators)

5  This was the 3rd of 8 meetings between the two teams with St. John’s holding a 1-1-1-0 record scoring while giving up 11.

6  The IceCaps season record now stands at 12-6-4-2 scoring 76 while giving up 78. Their road record is 6-6-1-1 scoring 35 while giving up 44 while their home record now stands at 6-0-3-1 scoring 41 while giving up 34.

7  In the last 10 games the IceCaps have a record of 5-1-3-1 scoring 34 while giving up 30. They entered the game in 3rd place in their division .098 percentage points behind 1st place Toronto. Note: Winning percentage now determines the standings in the AHL instead of points due to the unbalanced schedule being played by the western teams.

8  After tonight’s game their record now stands at 12-6-4-2 scoring 76 while  giving up 78. Last year as the Bulldogs their record was 11-10-3-0 scoring 68 and giving up 63.

9  Quick points:

  • a)  Tokarski has now lost 5 in a row giving up 17 goals on 169 shots for a SV% of .899 going 0-2-2-1 over that span.
  • b)  Since being sent back Tokarski has a record of 0-1-1-0 giving up 5 goals on 67 shots for a SV% of .925.
  • c)  The D-pairing of Barberio and Ellis finished the night with a combine total of 0 points 2 shots and a -4 rating each were a -2 on the night.
  • d)  Miceli was a game worst -3 on the night.
  • e)  Tinordi was held pointless, had 2 shots and had an even rating bringing his totals since he returned to 2 assists, 6 shots and a +3 rating in 6 games played.
  • f)  Hudon has 0 points, 4 shots and an even rating over his last 3 games played.
  • g)  Neilson and Lernout were the only IceCaps with a positive rating with both going +1 on the night.
  • h)  McCarron was held pointless took 2 shots and had a -1 rating to go along with a fight over the last 4 games he has 0 points, 10 shots and a -2 rating.
  • i)  Ellis and Neilson were the only IceCaps without a shot while Claesson was the only Senator without a shot on net tonight.
  • j)  McCormick of the Senators picked up a Gordie Howe hat trick tonight.
  • k)  Gregoire got into his team leading 4th fight of the year tonight.

10  A look at the 3 stars of the game:

  • 1st Star: Matt O’Connor of Binghamton who stopped 27 of 28 shots.
  • 2nd Star: Ryan Dzingel of Binghamton with 1 goal, 2 assists, 1 shot and a +2 rating.
  • 3rd Star: Max McCormick of Binghamton with 1 goal, 1 assist, 2 shots and a +1 rating plus a fight.
  • Player of the Game: Michael McCarron with 2 shots and -1 rating plus a fight.

11 My 3 stars of the game would have been:

  • 1st Star:  Ryan Dzingel of Binghamton with 1 goal, 2 assists, 1 shot and a +2 rating
  • 2nd Star:  Max McCormick of Binghamton with 1 goal, 1 assist, 2 shots and a +1 rating plus a fight.
  • 3rd Star: Matt O’Connor of Binghamton who stopped 27 of 28 shots.
  • Player of the Game: Bud Holloway with 3 shots and a -1 rating rating.

12  The Senators break St. John’s 10 game point streak beating them 4-1 in front of 3604 fans at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton N.Y.

 Mark MacMillan opens the scoring at 4:14 of the first period scoring his second of the season from Gabriel Dumont.

Matt Puempel picks up a rebound and buries it behind Dustin Tokarski at 6:33 of the first to tie the game 1-1 with assists going to Cole Schneider and Nick Paul.

Ryan Dzingel tips a Fredrik Claesson shot from the point at 18:32 of the second period to put the Senators up 2-1 with Max McCormick picking up the other assist. It looked like it deflected off Jarred Tinordi.

Max McCormick would complete the Gordie Howe hat trick at 5:28 of the third to put the Senators up 3-1 with Ryan Dzingel drawing the lone assist on the play. He was left all alone in front of the net with no IceCaps player to be found.

Matt Puempel would seal the deal at 19:36 of the third scoring an empty netter to make it 4-1 with the lone assist going to Ryan Dzingel.

Dustin Tokarski would stop 26 of 29 shots in the loss while Matt O’Connor would stop 27 of 28 in the win. Final score: 4-1 Senators.

Next game for the IceCaps is on Friday December 11 at Mile One Centre in St. John’s where they take on the Rochester Americans.

 

13  A look at the periods:

1st Period:

  • IceCaps 8-5 on the shot clock and 1-1 on the scoreboard in the 1st 10 minutes.
  • IceCaps 5-4 on the shot clock and 0-0 on the scoreboard in the 2nd 10 minutes.
  • Gregoire vs. McCormick slight edge to McCormick.
  • Good period for the IceCaps.

2nd Period:

  • 3-3 on the shot clock and 0-0 on the scoreboard in the 1st 10 minutes.
  • Senators 3-2 on the shot clock and 1-0 on the scoreboard in the 2nd 10 minutes.
  • Pretty even period.
  • The Senators goal was called after a video review, play continued at the time of the shot as the goal judge didn’t turn on the light.

3rd Period:

  • Senators 6-2 on the shot clock and 1-0 on the scoreboard for the 1st 10 minutes.
  • Senators 9-8 on the shot clock and 1-0 on the scoreboard in the 2nd 10 minutes.
  • McCarron vs. Robinson slight edge to McCarron.
  • Not a good period the Senators seemed to want it more.
  • McCarron shouldn’t be fighting when the game is on the line.

 

Brampton Beast – ECHL affiliate:

The Brampton Beast don’t play again until Sunday Dec. 6 when they take on the Kalamazoo Wings at the PowerAde Centre in Brampton. Brampton entered the game with a record of 7-11-1-0 scoring 51 goals while giving up 61. They are last place in their division with 15 points, 11 points behind division leading Toledo Walleye.

Travis Brown has played 19 games scored 3 goals and 2 assists for 5 points to go along with a -6 rating.

Mark MacMillan has played 6 games scored 2 goals and 3 assists for 5 points to go along with a -2 rating. Currently in St. John’s.

Angelo Miceli has played 8 games scored 3 goals and 3 assists for 6 points to go along with a -3 rating. Currently in St. John’s.

Josiah Didier has played 4 games scored 1 goal and 0 assists for 1 point to go along with an even rating. Currently in St. John’s.

Stefan Fournier has played 5 games scored 0 goals and 1 assist for 1 point to go along with a -5 rating. Currently in St. John’s.

Tim Bozon has played 4 games scored 0 goals and 1 assist for 1 point to go along with a -3 rating. Currently in St. John’s.

Dalton Thrower has played 2 games scored 0 goal and 1 assist for 1 point to go along with a -1 rating. Currently in St. John’s.
