IceCaps – Pirates: A Numbers Game (Jan. 29, 2016)

Here are some comments and observations from the St. John’s IceCaps vs the Portland Pirates game at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland ME.

1  A quick look at tonight’s line combos and D pairings along with injuries and scratches:

2  The IceCaps power play went 1 for 5 tonight to bring their season total to 28 for 164 for a 17.1% success rate. The power play entered the game in 14th place scoring 27 goals on 159 attempts for a 17.0% success rate along with giving up 3 shorthanded goals. On the road the power play entered the game in 15th place scoring just 13 times on 82 attempts for a 15.9% success rate.

3  St. John’s penalty kill went 2 for 3 tonight to bring their season total to 155 for 186 for a 83.3% success rate. The penalty kill entered the game in 11th place giving just 29 goals on 184 attempts for a 84.2% success rate while scoring 3 shorthanded goal. On the road the penalty kill entered the game in 5th place giving up 13 goals on 93 attempts for a success rate of 86.0%.

4  The IceCaps were outshot by the Pirates 35-29Andrighetto, Scherbak and Dumont led the Icecaps with 3 shots each while Olsen and Grimaldi led the Devils and all player with 4 shots. (1st period 9-8 Pirates, 2nd period 12-9 IceCaps, 3rd period 17-9 Pirates)

5  This was the 4th of 4 meetings between the two teams with St. John’s holding a 0-4-0-0 record scoring 5 while giving up 18.

6  The IceCaps season record now stands at 19-16-6-3 scoring 128 while giving up 144. Their road record is 10-10-2-2 scoring 60 while giving up 74 while their home record now stands at 9-6-4-1 scoring 67 while giving up 70.

7  In the last 10 games the IceCaps have a record of 3-6-1-0 scoring 26 while giving up 38. They entered the game in 4th place in their division .253 percentage points behind 1st place Toronto. Note: Winning percentage now determines the standings in the AHL instead of points due to the unbalanced schedule being played by the western teams.

8  After tonight’s game their record now stands at 19-16-6-3 scoring 128 while giving up 144. Last year as the Bulldogs their record was 21-17-6-0 scoring 114 and giving up 113.

9  Quick points:

  • a) Andrighetto had an assist giving him 3 goals, 4 assists and a 5 game point streak since being sent down 7 games ago.
  • b) Holloway picked up a goal giving him a 4 game point streak consisting of 3 goals and 2 assists.
  • d) The IceCaps are averaging 29.23 shots forth per game good for 21st place overall in the league.
  • e) Ellis picked up an assist giving him 1 goal and 1 assist in his last 4 games played.
  • f) Pasquale has given up 12 goals on 80 shots over his last 5 appearances for a SV% of .850 and a record of 1-3-0-0.
  • g) Scherbak has 2 goals and 1 assist in his last 4 games played.
  • h) IceCaps played 3 minutes and 12 seconds with the net empty and didn’t give up a goal.
  • i) McCarron, Bournival and Johnston all finished the game with a -2 rating.
  • j) Lernout, Johnston and Eisenschmid were all held shotless.
  • k) Friberg picked up an assist giving him 1 goal and 3 assists in his last 5 games played.
  • l)  St. John’s has now been outshot by their opponents 29 times this season for a record of 12-9-5-3.
  • m) The IceCaps have now been outscored 54-38 in the 3rd period.
  • n) St. John’s is averaging 30.90 shots against per game putting them in 20th place in the league in that category.
  • o) Christian Thomas still leads the team in-game winning goals with 3.
  • p) The IceCaps have scored 2 or less goals 22 times this season giving them a record of 2-14-4-2 in those games scoring 33 while giving up 76 goals.

10  A look at the 3 stars of the game:

  • 1st Star: Rocco Grimaldi of Portland with 2 goals, 4 shots and a +1 rating.
  • 2nd Star: Mike McKenna of Portland who stopped 27 of 28 shots.
  • 3rd Star: Rob Schremp of Portland with 1 goal, 2 shots and an even rating.
  • Player of the Game: Morgan Ellis with 1 assist, 2 shots and an even rating.

11 My 3 stars of the game would have been:

  • 1st Star: Rocco Grimaldi of Portland with 2 goals, 4 shots and a +1 rating.
  • 2nd Star: Wayne Simpson of Portland with 2 assists, 4 shots and  a +1 rating.
  • 3rd Star: Mike McKenna of Portland who stopped 27 of 28 shots.
  • Player of the Game: Morgan Ellis with 1 assist, 2 shots and an even rating.

12  Portland scores three third period goals on their way to a 4-2 win over the IceCaps in front of 3057 fans at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland ME.

 Cameron Gaunce gets the Pirates on the board first scoring his 2nd of the year high glove side at 10:11 of the opening period with assists going to John McFarland and MacKenzie Weegar.

Bud Holloway would score short side on a 5-on-3 power play with just forty-two seconds left in the second period to tie the game 1-1 with helpers going to Sven Andrighetto and Morgan Ellis.

Rocco Grimaldi makes it 2-1 Pirates at 1:59 of the third period with assists going to Mike Matheson and Wayne Simpson.

Rob Schremp scores on the power play at 12:07 of the third period to put the Pirates up 3-1 with assists to Mackenzie Weegar and Rob Flick.

Less than a minute later Rocco Grimaldi makes it 4-1 with helpers to Kyle Rau and Wayne Simpson.

Mark MacMillan gets his 5th of the year with just three seconds left in the game to make it 4-2 with assists going to Nikita Scherbak and Max Friberg.

Eddie Pasquale stopped 31 of 35 in a losing cause while Mike McKenna would stop 27 of 29 to pick up the win. Final score: 4-2 Pirates.

Next game for the IceCaps is on Saturday Jan 30 at the XL Center in Hartford CT where they take on the Hartford Wolf Pack.

13  A look at the periods:

1st Period:

  • Pirates 7-4 on the shot clock and 0-0 on the scoreboard in the 1st 10 minutes.
  • IceCaps 4-2 on the shot clock but 1-0 Pirates on the scoreboard in the 2nd 10 minutes.
  • No IceCap had more than 1 shot on goal.
  • Slight edge to the Pirates in this period.
  • IceCaps had to kill off 2 penalties in the period while the Pirates had none.

2nd Period:

  • IceCaps 10-3 on the shot clock and 0-0 on the scoreboard in the 1st 10 minutes.
  • Pirates 6-2 on the shot clock but 1-0 IceCaps on the scoreboard in the 2nd 10 minutes.
  • Andrighetto had 3 shots on goal in the period.
  • Pirates took 4 penalties in the period resulting in a 5 on 3 for 1 minute and 1 second.
  • IceCaps were the better team they stayed out of the box and took advantage of their chances.

3rd Period:

  • Pirates 9-2 on the shot clock and 1-0 on the scoreboard for the 1st 10 minutes.
  • Pirates 8-7 on the shot clock and 2-1 on the scoreboard in the 2nd 10 minutes.
  • Pirates by far the better team in the period.


Brampton Beast – ECHL affiliate:

The Brampton Beast dropped a 4-0 decision to the Toledo Walleye in front of  5470 fans at the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio. Brampton now has a record of 14-19-5-3  scoring 106 goals while giving up 138. They are in last place in their division with 36 points, 18 points behind division leading Toledo Walleye.

Travis Brown had 0 goals, 0 assists, 4 shots and an even rating.

Angelo Miceli had 0 goals, 0 assists, 3 shots and a -3 rating.

Tim Bozon had 0 goals, 0 assists, 2 shots and an even rating.

Branden McNally had 0 goals, 0 assists, 3 shots and a -3 rating.

Dalton Thrower had 0 goals, 0 assists, 3 shots and a -1 rating.

Mark MacMillan has played 6 games scored 2 goals and 3 assists for 5 points to go along with a -2 rating. Currently in St. John’s.

Josiah Didier has played 4 games scored 1 goal and 0 assists for 1 point to go along with an even rating. Currently in St. John’s.
