Here are some comments and observations from the St. John’s IceCaps vs Albany Devils game at the Times Union Center in Albany N.Y.

1  A quick look at tonight’s line combos and D pairings along with injuries and scratches:

Notes:

  • Tinordi is down on a conditioning stint.
  • Luc-Olivier Blain released from his 25-game PTO.
  • Luke Pither signed to a 25-game PTO.
  • Michael Bournival on waivers from Montreal must clear to play in St. John’s.

2  The IceCaps power play went 0 for 5 tonight bringing their season total to 14 for 75 for a 18.7% success rate. The power play entered the game in 8th place scoring 14 goals on 70 attempts for a 20.0% success rate along with giving up 1 shorthanded goal. On the road the power play entered the game in 5th place scoring just 8 times on 39 attempts for a 17.2% success rate.

3  St. John’s penalty kill went 4 for 5 tonight to bring their season total to 79 for 94 for a 84.0% success rate. The penalty kill entered the game in 11th place giving just 14 goals on 89 attempts for a 84.3% success rate while scoring 1 shorthanded goal. On the road the penalty kill entered the game in 7th place giving up 7 goals on 48 attempts for a success rate of 86.0%.

4  The IceCaps were outshot 38-18 by the Devils. Dumont led the Icecaps with 4 shots while Boucher led the Devils and all players with 10 shots. (1st period 10-7 Devils, 2nd period 10-5 Devils, 3rd period 13-4 Devils, OT period 5-2 Devils  )

5  This was the 1st of 8 meetings between the two teams with St. John’s holding a 0-0-1-0 record scoring while giving up 2.

6  The IceCaps season record now stands at 11-5-4-2 scoring 73 while giving up 73. Their road record is 5-5-1-1 scoring 32 while giving up 39 while their home record now stands at 6-0-3-1 scoring 41 while giving up 34.

7  In the last 10 games the IceCaps have a record of 5-1-3-1 scoring 36 while giving up 32. They entered the game in 3rd place in their division .095 percentage points behind 1st place Toronto. Note: Winning percentage now determines the standings in the AHL instead of points due to the unbalanced schedule being played by the western teams.

8  After tonight’s game their record now stands at 11-5-4-2 scoring 73 while  giving up 73. Last year as the Bulldogs their record was 10-10-2-0 scoring 63 and giving up 59.

9  Quick points:

  • a)  Tokarski stopped 36 0f 38 shots tonight for a SV% of .947.
  • b)  Holloway failed to pick up a point for only the 6th time this season in the 20 games he has played this year picking up 6 goals and 17 assists to lead the team with 23 points.
  • c)  McCarron had 2 shots and was a -2 tonight.
  • d)  Hudon was held pointless and shot less tonight.
  • e)  Tinordi was held pointless had 2 shots and an even rating bringing his totals since he returned to 2 assists, 4 shots and a +3rating in 4 games played.
  • f)  St. John’s has now picked up points in 9 straight games going 5-0-3-1 scoring 35 goals while giving up 28.
  • g)  Dumont was on the ice for all 3 goals scored in the game tonight ending with an even rating.
  • h)  The IceCaps have given up a power play goal in 4 straight games now giving up 4 goals on 22 attempts for a 81.8% success rate.
  • i)  Tokarski’s last 3 starts ended up in either a shoot out or overtime with him losing all 3 going 0-0-2-1.
  • j)  Reid Boucher had 10 of the 38 Albany shots on goal tonight.

10  A look at the 3 stars of the game:

  • 1st Star: Paul Thompson of Albany with 1 goal, 4 shots and +1 rating.
  • 2nd Star: Dustin Tokarski who stopped 36 of 38 shots.
  • 3rd Star: Marc-Andre Gragnani of Albany with 2 assists, 0  shots and -1 rating.
  • Player of the Game:  Darren Dietz with 0 points, 2 shots and -1 rating.

11 My 3 stars of the game would have been:

  • 1st Star:  Dustin Tokarski who stopped 36 of 38 shots.
  • 2nd Star: Marc-Andre Gragnani of Albany with 2 assists, 0  shots and -1 rating.
  • 3rd Star: Reid Boucher of Albany with 10 shots and an even  rating.
  • Player of the Game: Gabriel Dumont with 1 goal, 4 shots and an even rating.

12  Dustin Tokarski makes 36 saves but it isn’t enough as the IceCaps drop a 2-1 overtime decision to the Albany Devils in front of 1963 fans at the Times Union Center in Albany N.Y.

 Mike Sislo would beat Dustin Tokarski with a shot from the top of the face off circle on the powerplay at 11:16 of the first putting the Devils up 1-0 assists would go to Marc-Andre Gragnani and Corey Tropp.

 Just twenty seconds later Gabriel Dumont would tie the game 1-1 with helpers to Joel Hanley and Stefan Fournier.

The second and third periods would be scoreless affairs with the IceCaps being out shot in both frames by a 23-9 count.

Paul Thompson would beat Dustin Tokarski short side at 3:56 of the overtime period to end the game with  Marc-Andre Gragnani drawing the lone assist on the play.

Dustin Tokarski would stop 36 of 38 shots in a losing cause while Yann Danis would stop 17 of 18 to pick up the win. Final score: 2-1 Devils .

Next game for the IceCaps is on Friday December 4 at the Utica Memorial Arena in Utica N.Y. where they take on the Utica Comets.

 

13  A look at the periods:

1st Period:

  • Devils 4-2 on the shot clock and 0-0 on the scoreboard in the 1st 10 minutes.
  • Devils 6-5 on the shot clock and 1-1 on the scoreboard in the 2nd 10 minutes.
  • Gregoire vs Tropp draw
  • Dumont had 3 of the 7 shots in the period.
  • Pretty even period.

2nd Period:

  • Devils 7-0 on the shot clock and 0-0 on the scoreboard in the 1st 10 minutes.
  • IceCaps 5-3 on the shot clock and 0-0 on the scoreboard in the 2nd 10 minutes.
  • They were held off the shot clock for the 1st 12 and a half minutes of the period.
  • Way too many icings in the period they just couldn’t get out of their own end.
  • All devils this period.

3rd Period:

  • Devils 5-2 on the shot clock and 0-0 on the scoreboard for the 1st 10 minutes.
  • Devils 8-2 on the shot clock and 0-0 on the scoreboard in the 2nd 10 minutes.
  • Icecaps 1st shot of the period came around the 8 minute mark.
  • Devils were by far the better team in this period.

OT Period

  • Devils 5-2 shots on goal and 1-0 on the scoreboard.
  • Danis came up with a big stop on Dumont who came in on a clean breakaway with the IceCaps shorthanded.
  • Tokarski kept this game close, he was great.

 

Brampton Beast – ECHL affiliate:

The Beast don’t play until Thursday Dec.3 when they take on the Adirondack Thunder at the PowerAde Centre in Brampton. Their record now stands at 7-9-1-0 scoring 49 goals while giving up 54. They are last place in their division with 15 points, 7 points behind division leading Toledo Walleye.

Travis Brown has played 17 games scored 3 goals and 2 assists for 5 points to go along with a -5 rating.

Mark MacMillan has played 6 games scored 2 goals and 3 assists for 5 points to go along with a -2 rating. Currently in St. John’s.

Angelo Miceli has played 8 games scored 3 goals and 3 assists for 6 points to go along with a -3 rating. Currently in St. John’s.

Josiah Didier has played 4 games scored 1 goal and 0 assists for 1 point to go along with an even rating. Currently in St. John’s.

Stefan Fournier has played 5 games scored 0 goals and 1 assist for 1 point to go along with a -5 rating. Currently in St. John’s.

Tim Bozon has played 4 games scored 0 goals and 1 assist for 1 point to go along with a -3 rating. Currently in St. John’s.

Dalton Thrower has played 2 games scored 0 goal and 1 assist for 1 point to go along with a -1 rating. Currently in St. John’s.

Eddie Pasquale has played 7 games going 2-4-1-0 with a GAA of 3.05 and a SV% of .899. Currently in St. John’s.
