Here are some comments and observations from the St. John’s IceCaps vs the Utica Comets game at the Utica Memorial Auditorium in Utica, New York

1  A quick look at tonight’s line combos and D pairings along with injuries and scratches:

Notes:

  • Defenseman Christopher Joyaux was signed to a 25-game PTO on Wednesday.
  • Forward Cory Ward was signed to a PTO on Friday.
  • Darren Dietz was sent down on March 16 and recalled on March 17.

2  The IceCaps power play went 0 for 3 tonight to bring their season total to 46 for 245 for a 18.8% success rate. The power play entered the game in 8th place scoring 46 goals on 242 attempts for a 19.0% success rate along with giving up 4 shorthanded goals. On the road the power play entered the game in 17th place scoring 18 times on 118 attempts for a 15.3% success rate.

3  St. John’s penalty kill went 4 for 4 tonight to bring their season total to 224 for 260 for a 85.9% success rate. The penalty kill entered the game in 6th place giving just 36 goals on 256 attempts for a 85.9% success rate while scoring 3 shorthanded goal. On the road the penalty kill entered the game in 2nd place giving up 16 goals on 117 attempts for a success rate of 86.2%.

4  The IceCaps were outshot by the Comets 31-21Hudon, Friberg and Gregoire led the Icecaps and all players  with 3 shots each while 6 Comets also had 3 shots each. (1st period 10-7 Comets, 2nd period 7-7 tie, 3rd period 14-5 Comets, OT period  2-0 IceCaps)

5  This was the 6th of 8 meetings between the two teams with St. John’s holding a 3-2-1-0 record scoring 12 while giving up 15.

6  The IceCaps season record now stands at 28-25-8-3 scoring 177 while giving up 196. Their road record is 13-15-2-2 scoring 77 while giving up 96 while their home record now stands at 15-10-6-1 scoring 99 while giving up 101.

7  In the last 10 games the IceCaps have a record of 5-4-1-0 scoring 27 while giving up 26. They entered the game in 5th place in their division, 11th place in the conference and 21st place in the league and are .222 percentage points behind 1st place Toronto. Note: Winning percentage now determines the standings in the AHL instead of points due to the unbalanced schedule being played by the western teams.

8  After tonight’s game their record now stands at 28-25-8-3 scoring 177 while giving up 196. Last year as the Bulldogs their record was 30-25-9-0 scoring 173 and giving up 169.

9  Quick points:

  • a) Fucale broke a 5 game personal losing streak.
  • b) Ellis had an assist giving him 3 points since being sent back by the Habs 5 games ago.
  • c) Joyaux is the 45th player to put on an IceCap uniform this season scored 0 points had 1 shot and was +1.
  • d) St. John’s has given up just 5 power play goals on 68 chances in their last 18 games for a 92.6% success rate.
  • e) Friberg scored a goal giving him 3 goals in his last 6 games.
  • f) Scherbak, MacMillan, McNally and Scott were all held shot less tonight.
  • g) Former Habs Prust did not play, Higgins 0 points, 3 shots and even and Hensick 0 points, 3 shots and even.
  • h) This was the 18th time the IceCaps have gone to OT with a record of 5 W, 8 L, 2 SOW and 3 SOL.
  • i) Ellis was a game high +2 while Ehrhardt of the Comets was a game low -2.
  • j) The IceCaps PP has scored 17 goals on its last 75 chances for success rate of 22.6% over their last 18 games.
  • k) This was the 33rd time this season that the IceCaps have scored 2 goals or less in a game going 4-22-5-2 scoring 49 goals while giving up 119.
  • l) Jordan Subban had 0 points, 1 shot and a -1 rating.
  • m) Hudon playing his 1st game since being sent down had 0 points, 3 shots and a +1 rating.
  • n) Fucale has a record of 1-4-1 in his last 6 games giving up 17 goals on 161 shots for a SV% of .894.

10  A look at the 3 stars of the game:

  • 1st Star: Max Friberg of St. John’s with 1 goal, 3 shots and an even rating.
  • 2nd Star: Zach Fucale of St. John’s who stopped 30 of 31 shots.
  • 3rd Star: Carter Bancks of Utica with 1 goal, 3 shots and an even rating.
  • Player of the Game: Jeremy Gregoire with 1 goal, 3 shots and a +1 rating.

11 My 3 stars of the game would have been:

  • 1st Star:  Zach Fucale of St. John’s who stopped 30 of 31 shots.
  • 2nd Star: Max Friberg of St. John’s with 1 goal, 3 shots and an even rating.
  • 3rd Star: Carter Bancks of Utica with 1 goal, 3 shots and an even rating.
  • Player of the Game: Morgan Ellis with 1 assist, 2 shots and a +2 rating.

12 Zach Fucale makes thirty saves to lead the IceCaps to a 2-1 win over the Utica Comets in front of 3860 fans at the Utica Memorial Auditorium in Utica, New York.

Jeremy Gregoire gets the Icecaps on the board first with a goal from the slot at 2:25 of the opening period with the lone assist going to Mark MacMillan.

The second period would be a scoreless affair with both teams recording seven shots on goal.

Carter Bancks ties the game at 9:53 of the third period with helpers going to Mike Pereira and Taylor Fedun.

Max Friberg ends the game at 1:19 of overtime scoring his 11th of the year from Morgan Ellis.

Zach Fucale would stop 30 of 31 shots to get the win while Joe Cannata would stop 19 of 21 in a losing cause. Final score: 2-1 IceCaps.

Next game for the IceCaps is on Saturday Mar. 19 at the Onondaga County War Memorial Arena in Syracuse, New York where they take on the Syracuse Crunch.

13  A look at the periods:

1st Period:

  • Comets 5-4 on the shot clock but 1-0 IceCaps on the scoreboard in the 1st 10 minutes.
  • Comets 5-3 on the shot clock and 0-0 on the scoreboard in the 2nd 10 minutes.
  • Pretty even period IceCaps had their chances.

2nd Period:

  • 3-3 tie on the shot clock and 0-0 on the scoreboard in the 1st 10 minutes.
  • 4-4 tie on the shot clock and 0-0 on the scoreboard in the 2nd 10 minutes.
  • Another close period.

3rd Period:

  • Comets 10-1 on the shot clock and 1-0 on the scoreboard for the 1st 10 minutes.
  • Comets 5-4 on the shot clock and 0-0 on the scoreboard in the 2nd 10 minutes.
  • Comets hands down the better team in the period.
  • IceCaps were just trying to hold on.

OT Period:

  • IceCaps 2-0 on the shot clock and 1-0 on the scoreboard.
  • Icecaps came alive and won it for Fucale after a bad 3rd period that cost him a shutout.
