Here are some comments and observations from the St. John’s IceCaps vs the Utica Comets game at the at the Utica Memorial Auditorium in Utica, New York

1  A quick look at tonight’s line combos and D pairings along with injuries and scratches:

Notes:

  • Bennett was recalled to the IceCaps earlier today.
  • Rankin was released from his PTO earlier in the week.
  • McCarron and Ellis were recalled following the game.

2  The IceCaps power play went 1 for 4 tonight giving up an empty net shorthanded goal to bring their season total to 40 for 218 for a 18.3% success rate. The power play entered the game in 11th place scoring 39 goals on 214 attempts for a 18.2% success rate along with giving up 3 shorthanded goals. On the road the power play entered the game in 18th place scoring just 16 times on 110 attempts for a 14.5% success rate.

3  St. John’s penalty kill went 4 for 4 tonight to bring their season total to 199 for 233 for a 85.4% success rate. The penalty kill entered the game in 5th place giving just 34 goals on 229 attempts for a 85.6% success rate while scoring 3 shorthanded goal. On the road the penalty kill entered the game in 8th place giving up 16 goals on 111 attempts for a success rate of 85.6.

4  The IceCaps and the Comets tied 29-29 in shots on goal. Dietz and McCarron led the Icecaps with 4 shots each while Kenins led the Devils and all players  with 5 shots. (1st period 9-6 Comets, 2nd period 11-10 IceCaps, 3rd period 12-10 IceCaps )

5  This was the 5th of 8 meetings between the two teams with St. John’s holding a 2-2-1-0 record scoring 10 while giving up 14.

6  The IceCaps season record now stands at 23-23-7-3 scoring 154 while giving up 178. Their road record is 11-15-2-2 scoring 70 while giving up 94 while their home record now stands at 11-8-5-1 scoring 83 while giving up 84.

7  In the last 10 games the IceCaps have a record of 4-5-1-0 scoring 23 while giving up 25 They entered the game in 5th place in their division, 11th place in the conference and 22nd place in the league and are .287 percentage points behind 1st place Toronto. Note: Winning percentage now determines the standings in the AHL instead of points due to the unbalanced schedule being played by the western teams.

8  After tonight’s game their record now stands at 23-23-7-3 scoring 154 while giving up 178. Last year as the Bulldogs their record was 27-21-8-0 scoring 152 and giving up 146.

9  Quick points:

  • a) Fucale has now lost 3 in a row and has a record of 0-3-0-0 in those starts giving up 8 goals on 74 shots for a SV% of .892.
  • b) Scherbak picked up an assist giving him points in 2 straight games.
  • c) Ellis had an assist giving him 1 goal and 1 assist in his last 3 games played.
  • d)  This was the 16th time that St. John’s has scored only 1 goal in a game going 0-14-2-0 scoring 16 while giving up 57.
  • e) Holloway broke a 4 game scoreless streak picking up a goal tonight.
  • f) St. John’s has now lost 4 in a row and has been outscored 14 to 6 over that stretch.
  • g) Scott, Miceli and Didier were all held off the shot clock tonight.
  • h) This was the 29th time this season that the IceCaps have scored 2 goals or less in a game going 2-20-5-2 scoring 42 goals while giving up 110.
  • i) Dumont playing in his 1st game since his injury had 0 points, 2 shots and a -2 rating.
  • j) The 1st PP unit consisted of McCarron, Scherbak, Hudon, Holloway and Ellis.
  • k) Scherbak and Holloway were both -3 for the night.
  • l) Former Habs Higgins had 1 goal, 2 shots and a +1 rating while Prust had 2 assists and a +2 rating.
  • m) Scott got into his 1st fight as an IceCap.
  • n) Jordan Subban had 0 points, 1 shot, a +2 rating, a fight and was picked Utica player of the game.
  • o) St. John’s has given up just 3 power play goals on 42 chances over their last 11 games for a 92.9% success rate.
  • p) In the 11 games played in February the IceCaps PP has scored 11 goals on 48 chances for success rate of 22.9%.

10  A look at the 3 stars of the game:

  • 1st Star: Richard Bachman of Utica who stopped 28 of 29 shots.
  • 2nd Star: Carter Bancks of Utica with 1 goal, 1 assist, 2 shots and a +2 rating.
  • 3rd Star: Brandon Prust of Utica with 2 assists and a +2 rating.
  • Player of the Game: John Scott with an even rating and fight.

11 My 3 stars of the game would have been:

  • 1st Star: Richard Bachman of Utica who stopped 28 of 29 shots.
  • 2nd Star: Carter Bancks of Utica with 1 goal, 1 assist, 2 shots and a +2 rating.
  • 3rd Star: Brandon Prust of Utica with 2 assists and a +2 rating.
  • Player of the Game: Darren Dietz with 4 shots and an even rating.

12 The Icecaps give up 3 unanswered goals on their way to a 4-1 defeat to the Comets in front of 3860 fans at the Utica Memorial Auditorium in Utica, New York .

Mike Zalewski would get the Comets on the board first scoring at 2:32 of the opening period with assists going to Jon Landry and Ronalds Kenins.

Wacey Hamilton makes it 2-0 at 4:22 of the second period with assists to former Hab Brandon Prust and Carter Bancks.

Carter Bancks tips a pass from David Shields beating Zach Fucale at 15:41 of the second period to make it 3-0 Comets with Brandon Prust picking up the other assist.

Bud Holloway scores top corner on the power play at 16:43 of the third period to make it a 3-1 game with helpers going to Nikita Scherbak and Morgan Ellis.

With just forty seconds to go in the game Chris Higgins scores an unassisted empty net shorthanded goal to seal the deal.

Zach Fucale would stop 25 of 28 shots in a losing cause while Richard Bachman would stop 28 of 29 to get the win. Final score: 4-1 Comets.

Next game for the IceCaps is on Saturday Feb. 27 at the Onondaga County War Memorial Arena in Syracuse, New York where they take on the Syracuse Crunch.

13  A look at the periods:

1st Period:

  • Comets 5-1 on the shot clock and 1-0 on the scoreboard in the 1st 10 minutes.
  • IceCaps 5-4 on the shot clock and 0-0 on the scoreboard in the 2nd 10 minutes.
  • Scott vs. Archibald winner Scott.
  • Comets were the better of the 2 teams IceCaps ran into some penalty trouble.

2nd Period:

  • 8-8 tie on the shot clock and 1-0 on the scoreboard in the 1st 10 minutes.
  • IceCaps 3-2 on the shot clock but 1-0 Comets on the scoreboard in the 2nd 10 minutes.
  • Comets were the better team.

3rd Period:

  • Comets 5-4 on the shot clock and 0-0 on the scoreboard for the 1st 10 minutes.
  • IceCaps 8-5 on the shot clock and 1-1 on the scoreboard in the 2nd 10 minutes.
  • Gregoire vs LaBate edge LaBate.
  • Hudon vs Subban lots of punches but not much connected.

Brampton Beast – ECHL affiliate:

The Brampton Beast gave up 3 power play goals on their way to a 6-1 beating by the Toledo Walleye in front of 6052 fans at the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio. Brampton now has a record of 15-26-7-4  scoring 133 goals while giving up 188. They are in last place in their division with 41 points, 30 points behind division leading Toledo Walleye.

Dalton Thrower had 0 goals, 0 assists, 0 shots and a -1 rating.

Mac Bennett has played 3 games scored 0 goals and 1 assist for 1 point to go along with a -3 rating. Currently in St. John’s.

Travis Brown has played 51 games scored 7 goals and 13 assists for 20 points to go along with a -11 rating. Currently in St. John’s.
