Moments after the Montreal Canadiens send defenceman Joe Morrow to the Winnipeg Jets for a fourth round pick, the Habs send the fifth round pick (2019) acquired from the Washington Capitals in the Jakub Jerabek trade to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for defenceman Mike Reilly (Chicago, IL, USA).

Reilly was drafted 98th overall in the fourth round of the 2011 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets, however he never signed an entry level contract. The left shot defenceman played 117 college games over three seasons with the University of Minnesota, tallying 18 goals and 71 assists in his NCAA career.

The 6’2″, 196 lbs blue liner stayed in the state by signing a two-year deal with the Minnesota Wild – where he would accumulate 18 points over 84 career games. Reilly spent more time in the minors with their AHL affiliate Iowa Wild where he recorded 11 goals and 43 assists in 103 games.

This season, Reilly comes north of the border to Montreal with 2 goals and 8 assists in 38 games played.

He has represented the United States at the national level twice, winning a gold at the World Juniors and a bronze at the World Championship.

On a family relation note – Mike’s father, Michael, was drafted in the 8th round of the 1977 NHL Entry Draft by the Canadiens. The college hockey right winger played at Colorado College and the University of Minnesota but never made his NHL debut.
