The Montreal Canadiens have signed their final restricted free agent, Phillip Danault, to a two-year, one-way deal with an AAV of $912, 500. This is a bridge deal from GM Marc Bergevin who is known to hand them out as a “show me” signal to the player.

Danault, 23, was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. After turning pro full-time for the 2013-14 season, Danault split his years between Chicago and their AHL affiliate in Rockford before he received the call that he had been traded to the Montreal Canadiens on February 26th, 2016 with a second round pick in 2018 for Dale Weise and Tomas Fleischmann. Following the trade, Danault scored three goals and added two assists in 21 games for the Habs.

When the Canadiens dealt Lars Eller to the Washington Capitals before the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, Marc Bergevin indicated that Phillip Danault would be someone to fill that void. We will have to wait and see if he can live up the task. If he wants to play up the middle, he will have to battle with David Desharnais and Torrey Mitchell for those spots on the 3rd and 4th lines. Wherever he does slot in, it’s evident that the GM is high on him as he was key in Chicago drafting him in the first place and obviously bringing him over to the Canadiens.
