Habs Add Depth with Mark Barberio Signing

The Montreal Canadiens have announced the signing of blue liner Mark Barberio on a one-year, two-way deal worth $600, 000 at the NHL level.

Barberio, 25, was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 6th round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He played for the Norfolk Admirals and Syracuse Crunch of the AHL over three seasons (2010-2013) while making his NHL debut with the Lightning in that third year. Since then, Barberio has been in and out of the line up with Tampa Bay.

During the 2013-14 season, Barberio put up 5 goals, 5 assists and 28PIM in 49 games. The rearguard from Montreal added 7 points in 52 games this past year. He only appeared in one playoff game on the Lightning’s most reason run for the Stanley Cup.

With the loss of Drewiske (signed with the Flyers) on the farm, Barberio would be an excellent addition to the IceCaps this upcoming season, however, he would have to clear waivers. Barberio adds to the blue line depth that Marc Bergevin has always loved to have since becoming Montreal’s general manager.

The 6’1″, 199-pound defenceman was not re-signed by the Lightning due to financial reasons, according to Steve Yzerman.¬†“We love Mark Barberio.”
