Canadiens Ink Xavier Ouellet, Matthew Peca

With the free agency market now open, the Canadiens have added depth to their organization with the signings of blue liner Xavier Ouellet and forward Matthew Peca (no relation to Michael Peca).

The Canadiens inked Ouellet to a one-year, two-way deal worth $700, 000 in the NHL and $275, 000 in the AHL (guaranteed salary of $350, 000). Peca was signed to a two-year contract with a $1.3 million AAV.

Ouellet, 24, was drafted by Detroit in the second round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He was bought out by the Detroit Red Wings following the 2017-18 season where he posted 7 assists in 45 games. The young defenseman from France has played in 141 NHL games, recording a total of 5 goals and 18 assists. This signing adds depth for the Canadiens on the blue line for a cheap cost. Ouellet wants to prove that he belongs in the NHL and he’ll get his chance to do so as others will be fighting for a job alongside him.

Peca, 25, was taken by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the seventh round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. This past season he played a majority of the 2017-18 campaign in the AHL with the Syracuse Crunch. With the Crunch, Peca put up 46 points in 63 games and added 9 in the playoffs. The forward has only played in 20 NHL games, all with the Lightning, recording 5 points. It is likely that Peca starts with the Laval Rocket which would provide them with a scoring, top center with plenty of experience. He would have to pass through waivers if he starts with Montreal.
