2016 World Juniors: Day Seven

After the annual New Year’s Day off day, the 7th day of the 2016 IIHF World Junior Ice Hockey Championships began with game 1 of a best-of-3 relegation round, followed by four quarterfinal matches. To start the day off at 5:00am eastern time, Switzerland defeated Belarus 5-1. If Switzerland wins tomorrow, they will earn a spot at the 2017 World Juniors and Belarus will relegate. If Belarus wins, they will force a third, winner take all game. Next up, we almost saw one of the bigger upsets in tournament history as Denmark lead Russia until the final minute when the game was tied up, and Russia went on to win in overtime. The second Quarterfinal game wasn’t as close, as the strong Swedish team shutout Slovakia 6-0. In what was the game of the day between two strong countries, including the host country, Finland beat an undisciplined Canadian side 6-5 with a strong performance once again from their first line consisting of Carolina Hurricanes prospect Sebastian Aho, and top 2016 NHL Draft prospects Jesse Puljujarvi and Patrik Laine. To end the 7th gameday of the tournament, the Americans demolished the Czech Republic by a score of 7-0, lead by top 2016 NHL Draft prospect Auston Matthews who got the hat trick.
