2015 NHL Draft: 26th Overall Pick

Tomorrow will mark exactly two weeks until the 2015 NHL draft in Sunrise, Florida begins. While the major headlines are surrounding projected the projected 1st and 2nd overall picks Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel, many experts agree that this could be one of the deepest, if not the strongest draft in history. Some are even comparing it to the 2003 draft which saw the likes of Marc-Andre Fleury, Eric Staal, Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, Brent Seabrook, Zach Parise, Patrice Bergeron, Shea Weber, Ryan Suter, among many others being drafted.

For the second straight year, assuming the Habs keep their 1st round pick, will be selecting 26th overall. This article aims to look at players who have been drafted at the 26th overall spot between 2003-2014, along with other players who have been selected in late in the 1st round. For the sake of understanding, we will classify 20th-30th overall as “late 1st-round” to give us a variety of options.

2015
Habs 1st Round – To Be Announced
26th Overall – Belongs to the Montreal Canadiens
Projected Late 1st Round Prospects:
– Joel Eriksson-Ek (C – Farjestad / SHL)
– Jérémy Roy (D – Sherbrooke / QMJHL)
– Daniel Sprong (RW – Charlottetown / QMJHL)
– Jake DeBrusk (LW – Swift Current / WHL)
– Denis Guryanov (RW/LW – Ladia Togliatti / MHL)

Over the last 12 years we have seen various players at 26th overall go on to be contributors to their teams such as Brian Boyle, Cory Schneider, Tyler Ennis and Kyle Palmieri. But the talent doesn’t exist only at the 26th pick, other “late 1st-round picks” over the same time frame include Ryan Kesler, Corey Perry, Tuukka Rask, T.J. Oshie, Claude Giroux, Max Pacioretty, Jordan Eberle, and many others.

So yes, the Habs are picking late in the first round assuming that they do not trade up, but especially in a draft as strong as this year’s, the scouting staff and management have the potential to pick up a real stud that fans of the bleu, blanc et rouge could be seeing as a strong contributor in the seasons to come.
